Frequently asked questions, troubleshooting, and how to get in touch.
Hardware
Do I need a LoRa radio to use MeshTrail?
No. All navigation, field guide, survival, and media features work without any external hardware. Mesh networking features require a compatible Meshtastic or MeshCore LoRa radio connected via Bluetooth.
What LoRa radios are compatible?
MeshTrail supports any device running Meshtastic firmware or MeshCore firmware. Popular hardware includes Heltec V3, LilyGo T-Beam, RAK WisBlock, and similar ESP32/nRF52-based LoRa devices with Bluetooth.
My radio won't connect over Bluetooth.
Most often: another device (a phone, the Meshtastic web client, the Meshtastic app) is already connected. LoRa radios accept only one BLE client at a time. Disconnect everything else, force-quit the other apps, and try again. If problems persist, restart the radio.
Offline Maps
How do I download offline maps?
Map tab → tap the layers/save button on the right edge → "Download current view." Pick a name, detail level, and source, then tap Download. Tiles cache on your device.
Why are some areas blank?
You're looking at a region you haven't downloaded, or a zoom level beyond what was cached. Re-download the region with a higher max zoom level, or zoom out to a level you have cached.
How much storage do offline maps use?
It depends on the area and zoom range. A 50 km × 50 km region cached up to zoom 14 is roughly 100–300 MB. Higher zoom levels grow exponentially — pick the lowest max-zoom you'll actually need.
Privacy & Permissions
Why does the app need location access?
For GPS navigation, track recording, compass bearings, and map positioning. Background location is only used during active track recording. No location data is sent to any server.
Why does the app need Bluetooth?
To connect to LoRa mesh radio hardware. Bluetooth is not used for tracking, advertising, or any other purpose.
Why does the app need camera access?
For the AR Peak Identification feature, which overlays mountain peak names on the camera view. Camera frames are processed in real time and never recorded or stored.
Why does the app need microphone access?
Only when you choose to record wildlife sounds to attach to field guide entries. Audio is stored locally on your device.
Is my data private?
Yes — all data stays on your device. No analytics, telemetry, or personal data ever leaves your phone. Read the full Privacy Policy.
Account & Purchases
Do I need an account?
No. MeshTrail does not require sign-up or sign-in.
I bought "Remove Ads" but ads still show.
Open Settings → Account & Premium → tap "Restore Purchases." This re-syncs your StoreKit entitlement from your Apple ID. If problems persist, sign out and back into the App Store on your device, then restore again.
How do I get a refund?
Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com and select the MeshTrail "Remove Ads" purchase.
Data Management
How do I delete my data?
Settings → Data Management → selectively delete nodes, messages, tracks, waypoints, journal entries, or offline maps. Deleting the app removes all data permanently.
How do I export tracks?
Navigate tab → Tracks → tap a track → Export → choose GPX. The file goes through the iOS share sheet, so you can save to Files, AirDrop, email, or any compatible app.
Can I back up my data?
Yes. Settings → Backup & Restore. Exports a single archive of waypoints, tracks, journal entries, and preferences. Restore on a new device or after re-installing.
